In my junior year of high school, I had the honor of winning a songwriting contest with Carnegie School of Music in collaboration with the Route 40 South African Music Festival. I, along with 5 other U.S. songwriters were chosen to fly to South Africa and collaborate with the bands there to perform in the festival. Dave Matthews was one of the judges.
Sadly, Nelson Mandela passed away during the week that we were there visiting. Everyone was unsure as to whether or not we would perform that week. The concert did end up occurring.
To this day, I am still in shock that I was able to have this experience. I collaborated with incredible individuals and very talented artists. I am happy to say that one of the individuals that I went on this trip with is Noso, who is having tremendous success in their musical career.
